If you’ve ever been on a motorcycle trip and found yourself on a less traveled back road, (for me it was highway 789 from Wyoming to Colorado) you may have thought to yourself, “This is outstanding, but what about those dirt roads I can see off in the distance?” This is where the Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR) come into play. The BDR group has taken guess work of where that dirt road goes, so it makes it possible to plan an off grid trip and have knowledge of what to expect along the way. The BD Routes are done in stages, and have unique challenges based on that states terrain. Not all the sections are easy, and not all the sections are hard, that is where your research comes in so you can ride and explore at your own comfort level.
I’ve ridden a couple of the BDRs and they are unlike anything I’ve ever done. In this post, I’ll get into what Backcountry Discovery Routes are, where you can find them, what makes each one unique, and why embarking on a BDR adventure is an experience worth pursuing.
What Are Backcountry Discovery Routes?
Backcountry Discovery Routes, often referred to as BDRs, are off-road trails specifically curated to adventure motorcyclists and off-road explorers. These routes encompass a variety of challenging terrains, ranging from rugged dirt roads and mountain trails to picturesque gravel paths. BDRs provide riders with an unparalleled opportunity to venture through uncharted territories, with some resources and without worry about trespassing.

Where Can You Find BDRs?
Backcountry Discovery Routes are growing every year so check for the latest routes on https://ridebdr.com/. On the website, you’ll find a whole host of resources to help plan and research your adventure. Pick a trip that interests you and start your research by viewing YouTube videos about that trip. Watch more than one video because it will help you get a clear picture of what to expect. These routes traverse through diverse regions, each presenting a unique set of landscapes and challenges that are bound to captivate any adventurer’s heart. Here’s a glimpse into some of the well-known BDRs in the US:
- Washington BDR: Journey through Washington’s rainforests, deserts, and mountains, exploring it’s contrasting landscapes. I’ve done half of this, merging it with an on-road trip to meet up with a buddy riding from another state.
- Oregon BDR: Wind your way through Oregon’s forests, mountains, and deserts, immersing yourself in the state’s diverse environments.
- Idaho BDR: Traverse Idaho’s high mountain passes and historic sites, encountering both beauty and history along the way. The Idaho BDR was my first and it was a blast. You can see photos and read more about it here.
- Utah BDR: Lose yourself in Utah’s iconic red rock formations and stunning geological wonders.
- Colorado BDR: Experience the majesty of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains as you navigate through high alpine terrain and charming mountain towns.
- New Mexico BDR: Discover the southwestern corner of New Mexico, where deserts, mountains, and cultural heritage come together.
- Arizona BDR: Embark on a desert adventure in Arizona, passing through remote landscapes and experiencing its unique allure.
- Nevada BDR: Conquer Nevada’s rugged landscapes, from deserts to mountains, and explore historic mining sites.
- California BDR: Ride through northern California’s coastal vistas, forests, and mountain passes, capturing the essence of the Golden State.

What Makes Each BDR Unique?
Each BDR has its own character, revealing the diversity of landscapes, cultures, and histories of the regions they traverse. From the lush rainforests of Washington to the arid deserts of Arizona, these routes provide a spectrum of experiences. Whether you’re drawn to the striking red rocks of Utah, the rich mining history of Nevada, or the alpine beauty of Colorado, each BDR promises a distinctive adventure.
Why Should You Embark on a BDR Adventure?
The experiences you have on a BDR trip are unique and thrilling. You will see sights that few people have ever seen before and meet people that you will never forget. Some people feel like they have to go outside the country to see sights, but I say they are right here in the good ol’ US of A. Here are a few bullet pointed reasons to ride a BDR:
- Unparalleled Scenery: BDRs take you through some of the most breathtaking and unspoiled landscapes, allowing you to witness nature’s beauty.
- Personal Challenge: Navigating through diverse terrains presents a personal challenge that tests your riding skills, navigation abilities, and adaptability. Do your research though, so you can manage your challenges and stress level.
- Cultural Exploration: BDRs often pass through regions with rich histories and cultures, providing opportunities to engage with local communities and heritage. You will meet people that you will never forget.
- Escape from Routine: There is limited phone service, so unplugging is a bonus part of the trip. You’ll get that dopamine from taking the path less traveled and will have a trip you’ll be talking about for years.
Backcountry Discovery Routes add another level of adventure you’re your motorcycle trips. Whether you’re a seasoned off-road enthusiast or a newcomer, BDRs are unforgettable. So, gear up, plan your journey, and get ready to experience paths less traveled. Your next great adventure starts with you and where the pavement ends.

Here are a few resources and items to remember while planning your Route:
- Main Site – https://ridebdr.com/
- Check State Fire Watches Daily
- Youtube – Research Route and Stages
- Official RideBDR Facebook page for latest route updates and to ask questions.
- Butler Maps have great info and are customized to each BDR
- Keep your route fluid because route changes to avoid obstacles, weather and other unknowns, is typical.
- Because most of these trips are off-grid, I invested in a Zoleo Satellite Communicator device in case of emergency and it has come in handy a couple of times. Read my review here.
